Bibliotheca Musica
Bononiensis, IV/1. Bologna, 2/1987. 25 x 34 cm, 50, ii pp. Line-cut of
the Rome, 1600 edition. In 3 acts with libretto by Agostino Manni with
spoken prologue, Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo is considered
the first orataorio or opera, slightly edging out L'Euridice by Giulio
Caccini and Jacopo Peri. Although all three composers were
associated with the Medici court in Florence, the Roman born Cavalieri
introduced his work in the Oratory of St. Philip Neri of Santa Maria in
Valicella (Rome). Most of the work is in drammatic monodic style with
only occasional numbers, choruses for example, with richer scoring.
