BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van, 1770-1827

Allegretto in h-Moll / Allegretto in B Minor. Erstausgabe / First Edition

detail of opening bars

Corona Nova, 2/1. Munich, 2001. Oblong, 35 x 26 cm, 4, 47 pp. Beautiful 4-color halftone of the autograph, a bifolio, reproduced in the original size. Recently discovered at Pencarrow in England, this curiosity is a short string quartet movement of 23 bars in 3/8 time. The recipient of the autograph, a young writer and traveller named Richard Ford, wrote on the manuscript: “this quartette was composed for me in my presence by Ludwig v. Beethoven at Vienna Friday 28th November 1817”. The piece serves as a wonderful snapshot of a spontaneous gesture of the master, both in terms of the music and the handwriting, unencumbered by changes or corrections. Notes by Martin Bircher & Stephen Roe. Includes first edition. Wrappers in handsome blue laid paper with silver lettering. Out of print.
